HERALD MARCH 2008
Dear All,
As I prepare both for Easter and my eventual return to the United States,
My mind echoes with the words from Jesus farewell discourses
"I will not leave you orphaned"
I can't help it like most ministers I feel rather parental whenever it
comes to my Churches. I love them, worry about them, and find it
difficult to turn them over to another's care.
It is similar to the way a parent feels when he or she takes his child to
the first day at school. The parent must entrust the care of the child to
another so that the child can reach his or her fullest potential.
I don't know about you, but I need to see how Jesus handled leaving his
Disciples in order to secure to receive some peace and healing at this
moment. Jesus in John's gospel speaks of a comforter and helper who
would come to his followers to lead them and remind them of his love
and teachings. Under this leadership the followers would do even greater
works than Jesus himself. Jesus is not so much saying a "Goodbye! It's
been good knowing you!" as a "Goodbye" in it original meaning of
"God (will) be with you!"
Over the last several months I have seen such growth at Kearsley Mount.
You have learned to trust the real teacher, leader and parent of the
Church, God's Holy Spirit. Because of the Spirits leadership you have
Become so much more positive, joyful and open to God's vision for you.
With this vision you have embraced and been embraced by other
Children of Christ's family. St John Fisher and St Stephen's have
blessed us and increased our joy as a family. How could you ever be?
considered orphaned? Your family is bigger and better than ever and
you have discovered your true parent in Christ's Spirit, and your
greatest days lie ahead of you as you anticipate how God will use
you in Church service.
I cannot depart from you with worries or concerns. You are not
Orphaned. You are united with your parent in your wider family.
You are not lost. You have been found and claimed for Christ's service.
I do not say to you "Goodbye" but "God be with you" as God always
has been and is and ever will be. Amen
Love and Peace Phillip Kearse.

Look on the bright side
If fate has been unkind to you, the tears will often flow.
Don't be ashamed just let them fall; it's nature's way you know.
But do remember other folk they have their troubles too
Just do your best and look around for something you can do
Some kindly deed to bring relief, to others who are sad. And though it's hard in time you'll find, that life is not so bad
For troubles shared are troubles halved, at least that's what folk say. They're right you know. You'll find the sun will shine again one day

==================================
You Know When you're getting old.
You know when you are getting old, when things don't seem the
Same. When everything you do does not register in your brain.
You can be halfway up the stairs, when suddenly you think!
Why am I going up the stairs, have I left something in the sink?
Or perhaps when someone tells you, they will call around at four.
Then when they do, you wonder why they are standing at the door
The thing that bothers me though, more than anything at all,
Is have I taken all my pills, or have I dropped one on the floor
Or should I take another one, just in case I get a pain.
Better not, because if I do, things just won't be the same.
It happens to us all loves, some of us more than others, and if
Like me, you realise, you are turning into your Mother.
The young can scoff, or ridicule, Alzheimer's they may say, but let
them laugh, it does no harm, it will come to them one day.
Written by Marian Dickinson.
May your troubles be less, your blessings be more, and
nothing but happiness comes through your door.

Nellie Winstanley and John Buckley supported Neil,
He received from John, the book "The Purpose Driven Life by Rick

Also included in the morning service Phillip presented Norman
Spencer, with The Methodist Hymn Book, as a thank you for all
the work, and skills he brings to Church with such cheerfulness,
we all know how Norman enjoys singing the hymns
We also had the privilege of Mathew, from St John Fisher playing
the organ for us that was very much appreciated, due to our own
organist Jean being indisposed having had a cataract operation.
We wish her a speedy recovery.

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law & four year
old grandchild. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was
blurred. The family ate together every night at the table, but the elderly
mans sight and trembling hands made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his
spoon on to the floor, and when he held the glass milk spilled on the
tablecloth. The son & daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess
We must do something about Father, said the son, I've had enough.
So they set a small table in the corner of the room, there Grandfather
sat alone with his food served in a wooden bowl
The only words spoken to him were admonitions when he dropped a
fork or spilled food.
The four year old watched in silence. One evening before supper, the
Father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor.
He asked, "What are you doing" Just as sweetly, the boy responded "Oh
I am making a wooden bowl for you to eat your food in when I grow
up and you are old" The words so struck the parents they were
speechless. Then the tears began to stream down their cheeks.
That evening the husband took Grandfather's and gently led him to
the family table, for the remainder of his days he ate all his meals
with the family.

Troubles
Troubles come in every shape, and tend to make one frown
But just cheer up, and never let your troubles get you down
For if you stop to think of it, more often so than not
Your troubles don't seem quite like ones, that other folks have got
If only magic spectacles could really help you see
That troubles are but stepping-stones, and not catastrophe
For on this journey we call life, when troubles bring dismay
There's always hope and promise of a clearer brighter day.

February
It's a strange month, a between month, it always seems to be
Caught between the he seasons of the year.
The spiders web is frosted in silver filigree, yet, already the first
flower buds appear
It's a strange month, such a short month; it's still in winters hold
The North wind does not want to let it go
It spreads its icy fingers, makes the morning sharp and cold
Dusts the evenings with a feathering of snow.
It's a strange month, but a brave month, and turning toward spring.
It seems to turn its face to the light. We say, "The days are drawing out"
And start imagining the magic of a balmy night.
It's a strange month, but a sweet month, and always seems to be.
A pause within the passage of the year.
Soon all the leaves will stir from sleep on each awakening tree.
The time of dancing daffodils is near!
Spring's Secret
In the midst of winter chill, long before the daffodil
Under bleak dark laden skies, a rare and tender secret lies.
By frozen lakes, by leafless wood, clusters of brave snowdrops flood
Whiter than the whitest snow, their dainty flowers start to show.
A soft and simple sign to say, spring is not so far away.

HERALD December 2007
Greetings from the Manse.
Joan Osbourne wrote a popular song in the 1990's that puts further
questions about God that sounds hauntingly like a modern, urban Christmas Carol.
It goes:
If God had a face what would it look like?
And would you want to see it right
If seeing meant that you would have to believe in things like heaven, and
In Jesus, and the saints, and all the prophets?
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us?
Just a stranger on the bus, trying to make his way home?
In religious history there had been many stories of Gods who worked
awesome deeds and transmitted great wisdom from their celestial
thrones. These gods always knew how dangerous and unclean
humanity was and so, humanity was always held away at a safe distance.
Humans stayed on earth; the gods stayed in heaven
The gods dispatched messengers to relay whatever instructions needed
to be given. No god could be so mad as to mingle with humans in
their deplorable condition.
The Christmas story changes our understanding of God. Here we find our
God "mad enough" to be personally involved in the world;
"Mad enough to be limited in power and vulnerable to pain and suffering
"Mad enough" to love the created order absolutely, unconditionally,
and everlastingly even in their broken and unholy ways
Yes, at Christmas the story speaks of a God who can be "mad enough"
to identify with the human struggle. Eugene Petherson paraphrase
John1-14 in "The message" to say "The word became human being and
moved into our neighbourhood" This God is not a general who barks out
orders by radio from some safe headquarters, miles away from the scene
of battle, but one who comes down into the muddy trenches of the front
lines to fight with the troops. "What if God was one of us?" God is and
has come to live in our neighbourhood. - Planet earth... Palestine
address.
Our God seeks to come close to us by living among us to reveal two
things: Firstly, he reveals to us what God was truly like, and secondly,
He revealed to us what a real human life should be.
There is a story about a little girl who drew a picture of a face in Sunday
School. When the teacher asked who was in her picture, the little girl
answered "God" The teacher responded "But dear, no one knows what
God looks like." The little girl exclaimed, "Well they know now!"
And so it was to be with Jesus. The word made flesh. After he had lived
His life of total love for God and Neighbour and given his life for
humankind on the cross. We saw the first true portrait of what God was
really like. God's likeness was that of Jesus.
Here can be said that there is only one way in which our God is truly
mad; God is truly mad about you and me- about all of humankind!
God loved us enough to throw away all power, all honour, and glory
In order to live amongst us and give a face to God.
Believe this Gospel news this Christmas and sing a new
card... "God was one of us; just a stranger on a bus trying to make his
way home with all his friends"
Have a Joyous and Blessed Season
Yours in Christ's Service Phillip Kearse

Our trip to London. By Renee Valentine
On September 26th 2007, Anne and Sheila Briggs, Stephen Tonge, and myself had a lovely day trip to London.
We left Manchester at 6-45am and arrived at the bus station in London at 11-15am. We began our tour with our own personal guide, Stephen, first stop was the Westminster Cathedral, which we found very interesting, then on to the Methodist Central Hall. We were met there; courtesy of Steven who had pre arranged it, by a very nice man by the name of Mervyn. He gave us a wonderful tour of the hall, from which we all came away a lot wiser of how it was founded.
We enjoyed lunch at a restaurant in Whitehall, and then proceeded to Downing Street, for a glimpse of No 10. Next Horse guards Parade, followed by a walk through St James's Park to Buckingham Palace
Afternoon tea was then enjoyed at The House of Fraser.
All had a wonderful day; we achieved all this by travelling on the Mega Bus from Manchester for £1,00 on the outward journey, £4.50 to return.
Thank you Stephen for organizing the day.
Renee, Anne and Sheila.
P.S. Thank you to your wife Dorothy for letting you loose in London with three women

Memories.
I put flowers on your grave today
It's now two years since you went away
Words unsaid and thoughts untold, I regret that now I am old.
I walk down a lonely street
Then I thought it's time I had a treat, a sudden yearning to
Recapture, forgotten days of courting rapture.
We walked beside the waterfall, and then I heard the river call.
Long ago beneath the trees, our hair blown wild by the breeze.
"Look" you, said, "A white swan gliding"
In the reeds an otter hiding
Now you are gone the surface is bare.
There is no swan sailing there, no otter can I find this day.
Without you here they have gone away. Now I sit here all alone.
A sight you looked for, and never saw.
He never did come here before.
A kingfisher, oh so brightly adorned.
I know now I will never be alone.
For you my jewelled bird have come home.

Christmas is a time for love, a time for joy and peace;
A time to trim the Christmas tree, and a time to stuff the geese.
It's a time when we come together, however far or near.
To shed a little hope into a world of sorrow and fear.
Yet Christmas could be all year round, if only we would try
To gently wipe an old man's brow or soothe a baby's cry.
If we could smile throughout the year, as we do on Christmas day
Just think what happiness we could shed along life's weary way
To give a gift of Hope to one who otherwise has none.
To be a friend to somebody whom everyone else has shun.
To be forgiving of our faults, and of our sisters and brothers;
To live in Peace and Harmony with each other and ourselves.
Ah, don't you see that Christmas is more than opening the gifts;
It's more than singing Christmas Carols, and rolling in big snow drifts.
It's a feeling that can stay with you throughout each day, all year.
All it takes is a loving heart, and a sensitive little tear.

Weekly Giving.
Do you have a problem with your regular giving?
Like me do you find one or more of the following?
· If I miss a week or two at Church I haven't got the cash to hand when Sunday Morning comes
· I lose track of how many Sundays I've not put the right amount in.
· I'm used to doing things through the bank.
If so, perhaps you would like to give to Church by setting up a standing order at your bank.
If this appeals to you just ask me for the Church bank
Details and you can get it rolling along without any
Problems. Regards Helen

Ladies Circle
We are nearly at the end of the first half of our
Autumn/ Winter session, and already looking
Forward to our Christmas Dinner at Carol and
Dennis's.
We have enjoyed a wide range of speakers, covering
A good variety of subjects- even been mystified by
a conjurer. We have had first experience of piloting
A plane (on slides I hasten to add) Visited Israel
(by way of a talk) enjoyed fish & chips and mushy
peas on a visit to Blackpool Illumination's
(by coach). The Revd Enid Knowles so humorously
conveyed the joys of growing old, and our last
meeting at the time of going to press was
hilariously presented by our friend Mr Ron
Standring, His subject being "Lancashire verse"
All so very enjoyable.
After our Christmas Dinner on December 17th,
We will recess until February 4th 2008.
New Members will be very welcome. Our meetings
Are held Monday Evening. Commencing at 7-30pm
In the lecture room.
One of our members, Elsie Nuttall is recovering
From a serious operation on her leg. We remember
Her in our prayers, and pray that this operation
Will be successful. Our good wishes are also sent
To Elsie Mahon and Dorothy Ogden.
May I take this opportunity of wishing everyone
"A Very Happy Christmas and New Year" on behalf
of the members of the ladies circle, and ask that
God's Blessings be with you at all times.

They said it couldn't be done
But he with a chuckle replied. Maybe it couldn't
But he would be one who wouldn't say so, till he tried.
So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin, on his face.
If he worried he hid it, and started to sing as he tackled
the thing, that couldn't be done and he did it.

Attitude
There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the
Mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head.
Well, she said "I think I'll braid my hair today"
So she did and had a wonderful day
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and saw she had only two hairs on her head
"H-M-M" she said " I think I'll part my hair in the middle today"
So she did and she had a grand day.
The next day she woke up looked in the mirror, and noticed that she had only one hair on her head.
"Well" she said, "Today I am going to wear my hair in a pony tail"
So she did, and she had a fun, fun day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror, and noticed there wasn't a single hair on her head
"Yea!" she exclaimed, "I don't have to fix my hair today"
Attitude is everything
Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting
some kind of battle.
Live simply, Love generously, and Care deeply, Speak kindly.

A few thoughts for every day
There are hundreds of languages in the world, but a smile speaks them all.
Everyone chases after happiness; not noticing happiness is at their heels.
An exasperated Mother, whose son was always getting into mischief,
Finally asked him "How do you expect to get into Heaven"?
The boy thought it over, and said "I'll run in and out, and keep
slamming the door until St Peter say's "For Heavens sake Dylan, come
In or stay out".

Thank you for all that you have done,
Stressful days are now turned into times of pride,
All this we have managed with you by our side,

Upon your friendship we now proudly stand.
The planning for the repairs to St John Fisher's Church Hall seemed to go on forever. When the moment finally came, we realised that we didn't have a place for the community to pray on a Sunday.
Health and Safety Regulations meant that the Church Hall had to be closed all together. The solution came in the friendship of Kearsley Mount Church, who willingly offered us a place to celebrate until, the building work was finished.
Since then, Sunday for Sunday, our two communities have come together and bonds of friendship and understanding have been renewed and strengthened. The "after- Mass-before Service- Coffee" is a special time of encounter and family spirit.
I know that the timetable changes and the preparations have caused
Kearsley Mount inconvenience. It was a special sign of friendship and Christian unity when everything could be planned together with such uncomplicated generosity. I have to say special thanks to Stephen Tonge whose efforts and initiatives paved the way for a warm and hearty welcome at Kearsley Mount.
Please accept our thanks, and we look forward to an opportunity soon when we can share with you our gratitude. Thank you for all that you have done. . !

World Methodist Evangelism Institute- 8th international Evangelism Seminar
"That the world may know Jesus Christ"
We had the tremendous privilege of representing the British Methodist Church at this nine-day conference in Atlanta, Georgia. We really saw the Methodist Church in a new light as we met with 300 representatives from 60 countries; it was like having the whole world in one room. We heard encouraging stories of growing churches, regular church plants and of Methodism expanding, as churches are planted for the first time in countries as diverse as Columbia and Lithuania, There was also inspiring stories from people who today face persecution as they live out their faith with quiet joy that many of us could learn from. We made many friends and formed links, which we hope will continue into the future. On a practical level we benefited from excellent international teachers and preachers, learned of the evangelism going on in other countries, and gained new ideas of what might work in our own setting.
Whatever the context, growing churches display an emphasis on prayer, the guidance of the Holy Spirit and an enthusiastic approach to worship and service as they share the wonderful news Jesus with their neighbours.
Another aspect of the conference was an opportunity to speak to American churches on the Sunday. Shirley went to Bethel View United Methodist Church with a similar style to Britain, while Christine found herself in a black Methodist Church with a wonderfully challenging approach to worship
There was a lot of laughter and American food was everything we had been led to expect- as Director of the World Evangelism, Eddie Fox, said at the end of the conference- "We have certainly all grown!" Our reputation was enhanced by our contribution to the cultural evening where we represented our country bravely in a folk dance, which unfortunately was filmed!!! For a small donation to a good cause we might be persuaded to show it to you.
Overall we both feel we met God in a deeper way that will inform our ministries in the future. We would love to tell you more and will be leading a number of services around the District in September to make this possible.

A Personal Tribute.
Kenneth was married in 1942, soon after he left with his
Regiment, the Royal Artillery Gunnery Division for India. He
had been a training Instructor in Salisbury, R.A.H.Q for many
years. After his return to the UK, post war, he and his wife
Beatrice brought up their two sons David and Andrew. Sadly
Beatrice died in 1989 and Kenneth continued living alone in
Bromley Cross
The past 18 years have been born with great fortitude,
Christian love and compassion. The extended family of David
& Irene, Andrew & Linda, have been of great joy and comfort
Kenneth has led a fine responsible Christian life complete with
Worship, fellowship and active in leisure pursuits until recent.
Times, since the return of my family to the UK in 1996 from
Kenya, Kenneth has been the essence of kindness, and
compassion to all of us. Myself Ceciliah, Susan and
M Malcolm feel a great sense of personal loss by his passing.
The Service of Thanksgiving for his life held at the United
Reform Church, Bolton attended by around 120 people on
Thursday July 26th was well appreciated as a moving tribute
I salute Kenneth's life as a good Christian, family man, strong
in fellowship, a worthy citizen of Bolton Metropolitan

thankfulness for his life course

CHURCHES ON THE MOUNT /
During 2007 three Christian churches - St Stephen's Church of England, Kearsley Mount Methodist, and Schoenstatt St John Fisher Roman Catholic Church all based within a 100 metre radius of each other, in Kearsley, have started to work more closely together. The name Churches on the Mount has been adopted for any joint projects.
Friendship increased when Kearsley Mount offered the use of their church to St John Fisher whilst their church was being renovated.
A working group was formed of representatives from all three churches. It's remit was to explore ways of working together and making an impact in the community.
In the new year further meetings have been arranged to explore other ideas and a leaflet drop will take place to all residences in Kearsley. The leaflet will give details of each church and information on further projects. Churches on the Mount are at present consulting with Philippa Martin of Bolton Christian Cohesion in the Community.
One of the first joint projects was a Carol Service held at St Stephens on the 21st December starting at 7pm. Children and grownups were invited to dress up as characters from the Christmas Story - such as shepherds, angels, kings and queens, stars, Mary, Joseph, inn keepers and animals. As the story of Christmas was told, the children dressed as the characters were asked to go to the front of the church to form a tableau- it didn't matter that - when the minister began the story with Mary and Joseph several Mary's and several Josephs got up - the story was not lost and the children all played a part.
At the end of the service there was a brief explanation of the work of Child Line and we asked for donations from the congregation for Child Line, £197 was collectd.
Sherry and mince pies were offered to the adults with juice and biscuits for the youngsters. Finally, Father Christmas gave every child a little gift. Approximately 130 people attended and it was a fantatstic evening. This could well be an annual event.
